My Review

“Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” is a Cold War drama about the search for a Soviet double agent in the British Secret Service. The film is mostly a big bore, as it is difficult to follow, poorly written, and a strenuous and difficult slog for movie-goers who did not read the novel. Director Tomas Alfredson and screenwriters Bridget O’Connor and Peter Straughan did not do a good job of adapting this popular 1974 novel by John la Carre to the big screen.

The cast includes actors who should know better than to take on nonsense like this: Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Tom Hardy, Mark Strong, Ciaran Hands, Benedict Cumberbatch, Stephen Graham, Simon McBurney, Toby Jones, John Hurt, Kathy Burke, and John la Carre in a cameo appearance. “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” did receive three Oscar nominations, and was a modest success in theatrical release for Studio Canal and Working Title Films.
