My Review

“The Island President” is a documentary film about Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed’s efforts to alert world leaders about climate change. (Nasheed held office from Nov. 2008 to Feb. 2012.) Most of his appeals at various conferences around the globe fell on deaf ears. Nasheed was ignored despite his testimonials on the effect of the rising of the ocean’s water on the low-laying sea level existence of his island nation, which was predicted to be under water in 30 years.

Director Jon Shenk did capture President Nasheed’s enthusiasm and the beauty of the Maldives Island nation. However, much of the 101 minutes of “The Island President” was spent on dull diplomacy and boring conferences. The left leaning producers Richard Berge and Bonni Cohen of Actual Films and Nasheed failed to make a solid argument that climate change and the rise of the ocean’s levels is caused by fossil fuel emissions. If this was their goal, then “The Island President” was a failure.
