The comic antics of Rowan Atkinson continues in “Johnny English Reborn.” English is called back into service at M17 despite major mistakes in his last mission. Director Oliver Parker (“Othello” 1995) keeps this sequel faithful to the original “Johnny English” of 2002, even improving things a bit. The opening credits of the film are a truly memorable salute to the James Bond movies, after which “English” is fashioned.
The screenplay by comedian Hamish McColl is a good example of dry British humor. The supporting cast includes Gillian Anderson, Dominic West, Rosamund Pike, Richard Schiff, Daniel Kaluuya, Tim McInnerny, Benedict Wong, and Stephen Campbell Moore as the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. “Johnny English Reborn” was successful in theatrical release for Studio Canal, Relativity Media, Working Title Films, and Universal Pictures. Another sequel was released in 2018.
