My Review

Billy Crystal and Bette Midler star in the hilarious comedy “Parental Guidance,” where he plays a man who gets laid off from his job, and they then goes to visit their daughter, played by Marisa Tomei. Tomei and her husband are suddenly called out of town, and she reluctantly asks them to baby-sit their grandchildren. A bone of contention is differing parenting styles, with the hilarity proceeding from there.

Director Andy Fickman (“You Again” 2010) does a good job of directing the cast with a well written screenplay by Lisa Addario and Joe Syracuse. Veteran comedy people like Crystal and Midler do their usual professional job with the material. Marisa Tomei also is in her element here. Tomei’s performance is probably her best since “My Cousin Vinny” (1992), for which she earned an Oscar. Tom Everett Scott did well as her husband, with other cast including Bailee Madison, Joshua Rush, Kyle Breitkopf, Gedde Watanabe, Rhoda Griffis, Jennifer Crystal Foley, and sports broadcasters Steve Levy and Linda Cohn as themselves.

The very watchable “Parental Guidance” was successful at the box office for producer Billy Crystal and 20th Century Fox.
