My Review

Producer-director-screenwriter Rob Zombie has made a comedy-horror movie based on the old time television show “The Munsters.” Strictly speaking, this film should be called a prequel because Zombie goes into the background and history of the characters of the sitcom that ran on CBS from 1964 to 1966. He did a good job with the movie, as it is faithful to the original series and does have similar humor and characterizations.

The film was well cast, with some of the actors under lots of makeup, including Sheri Moon Zombie (wife of Rob Zombie) as Lily, Jeff Daniel Phillips as Herman, Daniel Roebuck as the Count (Lily’s father), Richard Brake, Jorge Garcia, Sylvester McCoy, Catherine Schell, Cassandra Peterson, and Dee Wallace as the voice of the announcer of “Good Morning Transylvania.” Two members of the original series also had voice parts, including Butch Patrick (Eddie Munster) as voice of the Tin Can Man and Pat Priest (Marilyn Munster) as the voice of the Transylvania Airlines announcer. Principal filming took place in Budapest, Hungary.

“The Munsters” is watchable entertainment from Universal Pictures, who released the movie directly to DVD as part of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment and also directly to streaming on Netflix.
