“The Hunger Games” is out, and a big hit at the box office. The Lionsgate Films product was faithful to the novels by Suzanne Collins, judging by the reaction of the fans. She helped write the screenplay with Billy Ray and director Gary Ross (“Pleasantville” 1998), who did an outstanding job at the helm of this picture, kept the pace running smoothly, guiding actors to good performances, etc.
Set in the “distant future,” the story takes place in the nation of Panem, established in North America after some unspecified apocalyptic event apparently destroyed the United States of America. It is divided into thirteen districts under the economic and political control of the “capital,” and, after a rebellion, one of the districts was destroyed. The population of the remaining twelve districts are punished by forced participation in annual “hunger games,” to be reminded of who is in charge.
The acting is quite good, with Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark at the head of the large, big name cast. (We won’t mention the character names from here on out as they sound like people talking with marbles in their mouths.) Other actors include Liam Hemsworth, Woody Harrelson, Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Donald Sutherland, Paula Malcomson, Stanley Tucci, Wes Bentley, Toby Jones, Alexander Ludwig, Isabelle Fuhrman, Jacqueline Emerson, Willow Shields, Levin Rambin, Dayo Okeniyi, Amandia Stenberg, and Jack Quaid, son of Dennis Quaid and Meg Ryan.
Since “The Hunger Games” made the big bucks at the box office for Lionsgate Films, you can bet your Panem district raffle ticket that there will be sequels on the way. In fact, three sequels were released in 2013, 2014, and 2015, with a prequel scheduled for 2023.
