An entertaining sequel in 2008’s “Journey to the Center of the Earth” is out, with a whole new cast except for teenager Josh Hutcherson returning as Sean Anderson, as he is ready to go on “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.” The easy-to-follow, non-complex screenplay by Brian Gunn and Mark Gunn was well directed by Brad Peyton (“Cats & Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore” 2010), who kept the action and the pace of the film move along smoothly.
Josh Hutcherson did a good job as the only returnee from the original. Hutcherson would go on to star in the box office sensation “The Hunger Games” (2012-2015). Dwayne Johnson and Kristen Davis play his parents, Luis Guzman and Vanessa Hudgens play father-daughter tour guides, and Michael Caine appears as Sean’s long lost grandfather.
The cinematography by David Tattersall was excellent, aided by location shoots on the island of Oahu. “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island” was a success at the box office for New Line Cinema, Walden Media, Contrafilm, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
