“Hitchcock” proves to be a witty and entertaining movie about the goings-on behind the scenes of Alfred Hitchcock’s film “Psycho.” Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren have fantastic chemistry as the famed movie maker and his wife Alma Reville. The screenplay is a more than adequate adaptation of the 1990 book “Alfred Hitchcock and the Making of Psycho” by Stephen Rebello.
As in most biopics, the casting of actors playing personalities already known to the general public is crucial to the film’s success. This one is no different, with the producers and British director Sacha Gervasi (“Anvil! The Story of Anvil” 2008) hitting a home run with Sir Anthony Hopkins and Helen Mirren in the lead parts. Among the chosen few of the supporting cast are Scarlett Johansson as Janet Leigh, James D’Arcy as Anthony Perkins, Michael Stuhlbarg as Lew Wasserman, Jessica Biel as Vera Miles, Richard Chassler as Martin Balsam, John Yeo as John Gavin, as well as Danny Huston, Toni Collette, Ralph Macchio, Kurtwood Smith, Michael Wincott, Richard Portnow, and Wallace Langham.
The film is filled with good production values, including the musical score by Danny Elfman, the cinematography by Jeff Cronenweth, and the makeup and hairstyling, which earned the movie its sole Oscar nomination. “Hitchcock” barely made a profit at the box office for The Montecito Picture Company, Cold Spring Pictures, and Fox Searchlight Pictures.
