My Review

“Django Unchained” is a story set in 1858 about a freed African-American slave who goes on a search for his wife. He is helped out by a German bounty hunter, and, between the two of them, manage to get into lots of trouble, as is typical of director-screenwriter Quentin Tarantino’s films. This motion picture, a bit rough around the edges, also a characteristic of Tarantino, is a salute to the Spaghetti Westerns of the 1960’s.

The cast delivered good performances, starting with Jamie Foxx in the title role; he seems to revel in every on-screen minute. Others include Kerry Washington, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, Leonardo Di Caprio, Walton Goggins, Dennis Christopher, James Remar, Michael Parks, Don Johnson, Tom Wopat, Omar J. Dorsey, Don Stroud, Bruce Dern, Jonah Hill, and Franco Nero, an Italian actor who starred in Spaghetti Westerns, in a cameo appearance as Amerigo Vessepi. The big guy Quentin Tarantino himself also did a cameo, Alfred Hitchcock-style.

“Django Unchained” was nominated for five Academy Awards, with two wins, one for Tarantino for Best Original Screenplay and the other for Waltz for Best Supporting Actor, for his role as Dr. Schultz, the German bounty hunter. It was a solid hit at the box office for A Band Apart Films, Columbia Pictures, The Weinstein Company, and Sony Pictures Releasing.
