My Review

The story of the Hobbits continues in a spectacular and grand fashion in “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.” This second of three films serve as a prequel to “The Lord of the Ring” trilogy, all produced and directed by genius filmmaker Peter Jackson. The well penned screenplay by Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro was based on “The Hobbit,” a children’s fantasy novel by J. R. R. Tolkien, published in 1937.

The cast has people returning from 2012’s “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” including Martin Freeman as Bilbo Baggins, Ian McKellen as Gandalf, and Richard Armitage as leader of the Dwarves. The supporting cast includes Orlando Bloom, Evangeline Lilly, Cate Blanchette, Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Stephen Fry, Graham McTavish, Ken Stott, Aidan Turner, Dean O’Gorman, Mark Hadlow, Ted Brophy, Adam Brown, John Callen, Peter Hambleton, William Kircher, James Nesbitt, and Stephen Hunter. Benedict Cumberbatch does a fantastic vocal performance as Smaug, the last dragon of Middle Earth sitting on a pile of cash. He also has a secondary role as a mysterious sorcerer.

Despite the many actors, the real star of the show are the special effects, making it a good view in 3D in theaters at the time of its release. “The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” was a smashing success at the box office for Warner Bros. Pictures, New Line Cinema, WingNut Films, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The series concludes with 2014’s “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.”
