Walt Disney Pictures appears to be milking the success of the “Cars” franchise with a spinoff called “Planes.” Executive producer John Lasseter of Pixar is the creator of “Planes” under the auspices of Disneytoon Studios. It tells the story of Dusty Crophopper, a young crop duster plane who dreams of becoming a racer.
The Disney animation people did not take shortcuts in the production process. There are plenty of eye-popping aerial sequences, colorful graphics, and numerous airplane-type characters to keep viewers of all ages occupied. Credit goes to good direction by Klay Hall (“Tinker Bell and the Lost Treasure” 2009) and a well written screenplay by Jeffrey M. Howard.
Voices are supplied by Dane Cook, Stacy Keach, Brad Garrett, Teri Hatcher, Cedric the Entertainer, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, John Cleese, Val Kilmer, Anthony Edwards, Sinbad, Brent Musburger, John Ratzenberger, Carlos Alazraqui, Oliver Kolkofe, Barney Harwood, and Priyanka Chopra, one of India’s top stars, in her Hollywood debut. “Planes” was successful at the box office for Disneytoon Studios and Walt Disney Pictures. A sequel called “Planes: Fire & Rescue” was released in 2014.
