“Captain Phillips” is an excellent action thriller from director Paul Greengrass (“Green Zone” 2010). Tom Hanks stars in the title role as Captain Richard Phillips, who was taken hostage by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean in 2009, when they hijacked the MV Maersk Alabama cargo ship.
Hanks dominates the picture with his charismatic personality and his patented performing talents. This is probably his best role in years. The Hanks persona is juxtaposed with the obnoxious demeanor of the Somali antagonists, the head pirate effectively performed by Barkhad Abdi. Other cast members are Michael Chernus, David Warshofsky, Corey Johnson, Chris Mulkey, Yul Vazquez, Max Martini, and Catherine Keener as Mrs. Andrea Phillips.
Billy Ray wrote the excellent screenplay for “Captain Phillips,” a success at the box office for Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Releasing.
