The Walt Disney Company had a huge box office bomb on its hands back in 2013 with its remake of “The Lone Ranger.” Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski (“Pirates of the Caribean: At World’s End” 2007) created a film with a meandering storyline, a muddled plot, and poor performances by the actors, many of them miscast, including Armie Hammer as John Reid/Lone Ranger and Johnny Depp as Tonto.
The poorly written screenplay by Justin Haythe, Ted Elliot, and Terry Rossio was a big problem here. Bad organization by Bruckheimer and Verbinski is another issue. This movie is a mess from top to bottom and never really had a chance at success. The supporting cast behind Hammer and Depp include William Fichtner, Tom Wilkinson, Ruth Wilson, Helena Bonham Carter, James Badge Dale, Barry Pepper, Mason Cook, Saginaw Grant, and Stephen Root.
“The Lone Ranger” did not make enough money in theaters to cover the massive budget and huge advertising expenses, much to the chagrin of producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Bob Iger, chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company. The film was nominated for two Academy Awards: Best Visual Effects and Best Makeup and Hairstyling. It was also nominated for five Golden Raspberry Awards, winning one for Worst Prequel, Remake, Rip-off, or Sequel.
