Yet another version of the old fairy tale “Jack and the Beanstalk” is out in theaters this year. “Jack the Giant Slayer” is a decent retelling from New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures, loaded with special effects perfect for the 3D experience.
Director Bryan Singer (“Valkyrie” 2008) kept the pace of the nearly two hour film move rapidly. The story of a young farmhand named Jack, who must rescue a princess from a group of giants after accidentally opening a gateway to their land in the sky, is well told in the screenplay by Christopher McQuarrie, Darren Lemke, and Dan Studney. Cinematography by Newton Thomas Sigel and location shoots in England, coupled with fantastic 3D special effects, made this movie very satisfying visually.
Actors Nicholas Hoult as Jack and Eleanor Tomlinson as Isabelle, the princess kidnapped by giants, do a more than satisfactory job here. The supporting cast includes some veteran movie people like Ian McShane, Stanley Tucci, Ewan McGregor, Eddie Marsan, Bill Nighy, John Kassir, Even Bremner, Ralph Brown, Ben Daniels, and Christopher Fairbank.
Watchability and good entertainment are the characteristics of “Jack the Giant Slayer,” as “Fee, fi, fo, fum, I smell the blood of an Englishman” once again ring in our ears.
