“After Earth” is a science fiction film from the offices of superstar Will Smith. This movie, produced by Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith, has good production values, lots of action, marvelous special effects, but with a sluggish and unoriginal storyline from a mediocre screenplay written by Gary Whitta and M. Night Shyamalan, who also directed.
Will Smith originated the story, and stars in the film with his son Jaden Smith, both reunited on the big screen for the first time since “Pursuit of Happyness” in 2006. Their performances are at least passable, along with supporting cast members Zoe Kravitz, Sophie Okonedo, Glenn Morshower, David Denman, Kristofer Hivju, Lincoln Lewis, Chris Geere, and Sacha Dhawan.
“After Earth” was only a modest success in theatrical release, not great news for the production companies owned by the Smiths and Shyamalan and Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures.
