“Copperhead” is a Civil War drama from independent director Ron Maxwell (“Gods and Generals” 2003). Based on the 1893 novel “The Copperhead” by Harold Frederic, the title refers to the Northern opponents of the Civil War.
Set in upstate New York, the film depicts conflicts between the Copperheads and Yankee supporters of the war. This little explored topic is interesting in an historical sense, but the pace of this film is often slow. Bill Kaufman wrote the uneven screenplay.
The performances are at least adequate. Peter Fonda is the only familiar big name actor in the picture, appearing in only a handful of scenes. The principals are Billy Campbell, Angus Macfadyen, Augustus Prew, Lucy Boynton, Casey Thomas Brown, Francois Arnaud, Josh Cruddas, and Genevieve Steele. The independently produced “Copperhead” was not a hit of any kind at the box office.
