My Review

The Oscar for Best Picture of 2013 was deservedly awarded to “12 Years a Slave.” This is a true story of a free-born African-American man from New York who was kidnapped and sold into slavery in the South in 1841. Chiwetel Ejiofor is outstanding as Solomon Northup, the kidnapped man who endured twelve years of slavery in Louisiana. He was in almost every scene and completely dominated the 134 minutes of the film. Ejiofor was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar.

Producer-director Steve McQueen (“Shame” 2011) created a highly refined motion picture, and won the Oscar for Best Picture and nominated for Best Director. John Ridley won the Oscar for the Best Adapted Screenplay, based on the 1853 memoir of Northup. The third Academy Award for “12 Years a Slave,” out of nine nominations, went to Lupita Nyong’o for Best Supporting Actress.

The supporting cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Michael Fassbender, Paul Dano, Garrett Dillahunt, Paul Giamatti, Scoot McNairy, Sarah Paulson, Michael Kenneth Williams, Alfre Woodward, Chris Chalk, Terran Killam, Bill Camp, and Brad Pitt as abolitionist Samuel Bass. Pitt served as one of the producers.

Also worth mentioning is the musical score by Hans Zimmer, cinematography by Sean Bobbitt, and editing by Joe Walker. The very watchable Best Picture of 2013 “12 Years a Slave” was successful at the box office for Plan B Entertainment, River Road Entertainment, Film 4, and Regency Enterprises.
