My Review

A behind-the-scenes peek into the lives and careers of backup singers is the subject of “20 Feet from Stardom.” Director Morgan Neville and producers Gil Friesen and Caitrin Rogers won the Oscar for Best Documentary Feature and the Grammy for Best Music Film.

The most famous singer to be featured here is Darlene Love, who quit the music business and took jobs cleaning private homes. While cleaning someone’s bathroom, she heard her own hit “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” on the radio and decided then and there to return to show biz.

Other backup singers featured include Jo Lawry, Judith Hill, Merry Clayton, Lisa Fischer, and Tata Vega. Also interviewed are Bette Midler, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, Lou Adler, and many others. The independently produced documentary “20 Feet from Stardom” was successful in theatrical release.
