“The Book Thief” is the amazing story of a young girl in Nazi Germany who borrows books to read and then shares them with a Jewish man being sheltered by her parents. This pleasant and handsomely produced film has fantastic production values, outstanding performances, beautiful cinematography by Florian Ballhaus, and an original musical score by John Williams that garnered the film its sole Oscar nomination for Best Original Score.
The cast of this German and American production include Sophie Nelisse in the “title role,” Geoffrey Rush and Emily Watson as her parents, Ben Schnetzer as the Jewish refugee, and Barbara Auer as the mayor’s wife who gives out many books, no questions asked, some of which were banned by the Nazi regime.
There is fantastic direction by Brian Percival (“Downton Abbey” television program, 2010-2012) and a well-written screenplay by Michael Petroni, adapted from the 2005 novel by Markus Zusak. “The Book Thief” is a joint production of Studio Babelsberg, TSG Entertainment, Fox 2000 Pictures, and 20th Century Fox, very successful at the box office.
