My Review

The latest version of “The Great Gatsby” certainly is spectacular and has been given the full Hollywood treatment: Big name stars, lavish art-deco sets made for 3D, and even a rocking film score produced by Jay-Z and The Bullitts. Producer-director-screenwriter Baz Luhrmann (“Australia” 2008) added another twist, i.e., “Gatsby” was filmed in his native Australia, far from the sound stages of Tinsletown in Los Angeles.

Leonardo DiCaprio was hired to play the part of the mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby; he surpassed all expectations, playing the role with his low-key persona. Carey Mulligan, a British actress playing an American, brought a girl-next-door quality to Daisy Buchanan. Tobey Maguire was good as Daisy’s cousin Nick Carraway, recording everything for posterity. Rounding out the cast are Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, Elizabeth Debicki, Jason Clarke, Jack Thompson, Adelaide Clemens, Richard Carter, and Steve Bisley.

Luhrmann co-wrote the screenplay with Craig Pearce, based on the 1925 novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. This is the fifth film adaptation: The 1926 silent picture from Warner Bros., the 1949 version starring Alan Ladd, the 1974 yawner with Robert Redford and Mia Farrow, and a 2000 made-for-tv movie.

The verdict is in – the newest version of “The Great Gatsby” is the best of the five, successful at the box office for Village Roadshow Pictures, A&E Television, Red Wagon Entertainment, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
