“Black or White” is the story of a wealthy white attorney dealing with the custody of his bi-racial granddaughter after the death of his wife. They had custody of her, but the girl’s African-American grandmother’s lawsuit against him for custody is at the center of the plot. Producer-director-screenwriter Mike Binder (“The Upside of Anger” 2005) has a movie here that deals with family and racial issues forthrightly, without overdoing the drama often associated with these matters.
Kevin Costner and Octavia Spencer do well in the lead roles, with a supporting cast that includes Anthony Mackie, Jillian Estell, Bill Burr, Andre Holland, Paula Newsome, Mpho Kaoho, Jennifer Ehle, and Gillian Jacobs. Kevin Costner co-produced with Binder; their production companies Treehouse Films and Sunlight Productions shared in the profits as “Black or White” was modestly successful at the box office.
