My Review

The Best Picture of 2014 is…..”Birdman.” This off-beat black comedy-drama film from producer-director-screenwriter Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu tells the story of a theatrical production, as it follows Michael Keaton playing a faded star attempting to put together a Broadway play. The bottom line about “Birdman” is that the overall tone of the movie is caustic, much too negative to spend two hours of your life on. The dialogue is also extremely tedious and dull.

One intriguing aspect of “Birdman” is that it was filmed in one single shot, nearly two hours long, except for the very beginning and the very end. For this, cinematographer Emmanuel Lubezki deserves his Academy Award. The movie won four Oscars out of nine nominations, with the winners being Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Cinematography.

The rather large cast with Michael Keaton includes Emma Stone, Naomi Watts, Edward Norton, Zach Galifianakis, Andrea Riseborough, Amy Ryan, Lindsay Duncan, Merritt Weaver, Benjamin Kanes, Bill Camp, and Paula Pell, among others. This low-budget, low-life, art house cinema film “Birdman” was a modest hit at the box office for Fox Searchlight Pictures.
