My Review
“The Hobbit” series comes to a satisfying conclusion with “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.” Producer-director-screenwriter Peter Jackson has provided lots of action, special effects, and a storyline faithful to the 1937 J. R. R. Tolkien novel “The Hobbit” to satisfy fans, critics, and the general movie-going audience.
Martin Freeman returns as the affable hero Bilbo Baggins. He has been at the center of the trilogy from the beginning, which includes “An Unexpected Journey” (2012) and “The Desolation of Smaug” (2013). The impressive cast includes Evangeline Lilly, Orlando Bloom, Ian Holm, Richard Armitage, Ian McKellen, Luke Evans, Lee Pace, Ken Stott, Aiden Turner, Cate Blanchett, Hugo Weaving, Billy Connolly, and Benedict Cumberbatch in not one, but two roles as Smaug and Sauron. Veteran actor Christopher Lee continues to impress as Saruman, continuing a motion picture career that began in 1948 when he appeared in Larry Olivier’s “Hamlet.”
The well-written and well-organized screenplay by Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens, and Guillermo del Toro helped make this a great film series. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” is just plain fun and very watchable entertainment and a massive hit at the box office from Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, WingNut Films, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
