My Review

“Million Dollar Arm” is the story of a sports agent’s attempt to find baseball talent from India’s huge pool of cricket players. The film is based on the true story of J. B. Bernstein’s discovery of Rinku Singh and Dinesh Patel in an Indian reality show competition, who signed major league contracts with the Pittsburgh Pirates. (Both Singh and Patel spent several years in the MLB.) Director Craig Gillespie (“Fright Night” 2011) and screenwriter Tom McCarthy created an extremely pleasant movie that really is a pleasure to watch, especially for baseball fans.

The “charming” cast includes Jon Hamm as Bernstein, Suraj Sharma as Singh, Madhur Mittal as Patel, Bill Paxton as the pitching coach, Lake Bell as the neighbor, and Alan Arkin as the spunky baseball scout. Also appearing are Tzi Ma, Greg Alan Williams, Allyn Rachel, Rey Maualuga, and baseball players Curt Schilling and Barry Larkin as themselves in cameo appearances.

The pleasantly watchable “Million Dollar Arm” from Walt Disney PIctures was a modest success at the box office.
