My Review

“Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day” is a comedy film which tells the story of an eleven-year-old named Alexander Cooper who gets no sympathy from his family when he is having a day filled with disasters and all kinds of problems. On the eve of his twelfth birthday, he makes a wish that his whole family would have a bad day. His wish is granted!

Director Miguel Arteta (“Youth in Revolt” 2009) and screenwriter Rob Lieber have turned out a fun movie with loads of laughs. Ed Oxenbould does an outstanding job in the title role, especially starring in his first big screen role. The rest of the cast includes Steve Carrell and Jennifer Garner as his parents, Dylan Minnette, Kerris Dorsey, Megan Mullally, Bella Thorne, Toni Trucks, Donald Glover, Jennifer Coolidge, Burn Gorman, Martha Hackett, Eric Edelstein, Samantha Logan, and Dick Van Dyke in a cameo appearance as himself. This may be his first visit back to Walt Disney Pictures since “Mary Poppins” of 1964.

The very watchable “Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day,” adapted from the 1972 children’s book of the same name by Judith Viorst, was a success in theatrical release for The Jim Henson Company, 21 Laps Entertainment, and Walt Disney Pictures.
