My Review

“The Equalizer” features Denzel Washington as a retired government secret agent who uses his special skill set to dispense justice, vigilante-style, in the lives of his friends. Director Antoine Fuqua (“Olympus Has Fallen” 2013) and screenwriter Richard Wenk pack plenty of action into this two hour plus motion picture; however, after a while the constant advantage they give to Denzel’s Robert McCall over his enemies seems contrived.

And yet, Washington stars in another movie where his on-screen presence and persona really carries the picture. He has another box office hit on his hands, and figures to reap the benefits as he is listed as one of eight producers.

Co-stars include Martin Czokas, Chloe Grace Moretz, David Harbour, Bill Pullman, Melissa Leo, and E. Roger Mitchell. “The Equalizer” is based on a CBS-TV series than ran from 1985-1989. A sequel was released in 2018, with a second sequel set to come out in late 2023. This “Equalizer” has excessive violence that could have easily been toned down to change the rating from R to PG13. Don’t complain to me but to the folks at Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Releasing.
