My Review

“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” seems to be the dawn of a new era in the forty year old franchise. No more predictable plots, mediocre acting, or second-rate special effects. 20th Century Fox, producer Peter Chernin, and director Matt Reeves (“Cloverfield” 2008) have created the best of the eight “Apes” films with great acting, focused direction, and a fantastic screenplay written by Mark Bomback, Rick Jaffa, and Amanda Silver.

The complex storyline, a direct sequel to “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” (2011 reboot), explores the many aspects of the relationship between the human population and the ape community in the aftermath of the collapse of human civilization around the world due to a deadly pandemic.

Andy Serkis plays Caesar, the Lincolnesque leader of the apes, in the performance capture method. This is where the movement of the actor is captured by computer, which then animates the character digitally. The results are quite impressive, with all actors playing the apes doing it this way. Serkis also used this method in his role as Gollum in “The Lord of the Rings” series (2001, 2002, 2003). The cast also includes Jason Clarke, Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Toby Kebbell, Judy Greer, Kodi Smit-McPhee, et al.

The “Planet of the Apes” franchise includes the five original films of 1968, 1970, 1971, 1972, and 1973, with a remake in 2001. The reboot started in 2011, with sequels in 2014, 2017, and one scheduled for 2024. “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” was a success at the box office for TSG Entertainment, Chernin Entertainment, and 20th Century Fox.
