Special effects in 3D are the star of the show in “Pompeii,” a disaster film about the destruction of the Roman city of Pompeii by Mount Vesuvius in 79 A.D. Lousy direction by Paul W. S. Anderson (“Alien vs. Predator” 2004) and a disastrous screenplay by Janet Scott Batchler, Lee Batchler, and Michael Robert Johnson generate the usual soap opera/disaster movie plots and subplots not even worth mentioning.
Kiefer Sutherland heads a forgettable cast that includes Kit Harington, Emily Browning, Carrie-Anne Moss, Jessica Lucas, Jared Harris, and Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje as Atticus the gladiator (say that fast three times). Sutherland was nominated for Worst Supporting Actor at the Golden Raspberry Awards for this role. So, put on the 3D glasses and enjoy the FX, the only redeeming feature and the only item that will survive in the independently produced “Pompeii.”
