My Review

Gerard Butler plays a CIA operative stranded deep in hostile territory in Afghanistan who must fight his way out with his translator in the action picture “Kandahar.” On the positive side, director Ric Roman Waugh, who worked with Butler on “Angel Has Fallen” (2019), has created a dramatic movie with a measured amount of action, but without enough originality to make a trip to the picture show worthwhile.

“Kandahar” has almost the exact same plot and storyline as “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” which was a superior product released about a month earlier. One other positive element of this film is the excellent cinematography by MacGregor, with stunning scenery shot in Saudi Arabia. The supporting cast of the box office flop “Kandahar” includes Navid Negahban, Ali Fazal, Nina Toussaint-White, Mark Arnold, Corey Johnson, Travis Fimmel, Tom Rhys Harries, et al.

Producer Gerard Butler, his pal director Waugh, and screenwriter Mitchell LaFortune have a major box office flop on their hands with the independently produced “Kandahar.”
