Walt Disney Pictures continues with their habit of recent years in remaking nearly all of the classic films, this time redoing “The Little Mermaid,” a new live action version of the 1989 animated feature. Director Rob Marshall (“Mary Poppins Returns” 2018) and screenwriter David Magee have retained much of the charm of the story and the music of the original.
Marshall and producer Lyn-Manuel Miranda have cast the very talented Halle Bailey in the role of Ariel. Talent is also evident in the rest of the cast, including Jonah Hauer-King, Daveed Diggs, Awkwafina, Jacob Tremblay, Noma Dumezweni, Art Malek, Javier Bardem, Melissa McCarthy, and Martina Laird.
Unfortunately for The Walt Disney Company, audiences have stayed away from “The Little Mermaid.” The film did not make enough cash to cover the $250 million budget, let alone the very expensive costs of advertising.
