My Review

An obscure independent film surprised everyone by winning the Academy Award for Best Picture of 2015. “Spotlight” tells the true story of the Boston Globe’s investigation into what turned out to be widespread child abuse by Roman Catholic priests. Director-screenwriter Tom McCarthy (“Meet the Parents” 2000) skillfully peeled away the layers of dramatic revelation that make this the best journalism movie since “All the President’s Men” (1976).

The actors portraying the investigative team include Mark Ruffalo, Michael Keaton, Rachel McAdams, Liev Schreiber, John Slattery, and Brian d’Arcy James. The supporting cast includes Stanley Tucci, Gene Amoroso, Jamey Sheridan, and Billy Crudup. Keaton has the honor of being a star of two Best Picture Oscar winners in a row. He was also featured in the forgettable “Birdman” of 2014.

“Spotlight” won a total of two Oscars, out of six nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay by Josh Singer and Tom McCarthy. This two hour plus film also did quite well in box office receipts.
