My Review

Leonardo DiCaprio won the Oscar for Best Actor for his portrayal of a man on a fur trading expedition in the 1820’s fighting for survival after being mauled by a bear and left for dead by his own hunting group. Producer-director Alejandro Inarritu (“The Birdman” 2014) made a movie that is difficult to watch, especially the bear attack on DiCaprio, and a film that must have been difficult to shoot, in the inclement weather and all. It was a bit long at two-and-a-half hours, quite a slog for some movie-goers.

The supporting cast includes Tom Hardy, Domhnall Gleeson, Will Poulter, Forrest Goodluck, Paul Anderson, Lukas Haas, Tom Guiry, Grace Dove, Brendan Fletcher, among others. Inarritu co-wrote the screenplay with Mark L. Smith, adapted from the 2002 novel of the same name by Michael Punke. “The Revenant” was nominated for twelve Academy Awards, winning three for DiCaprio, Inarritu (Best Director), and Emmanuel Lubezki (Best Cinematography).
