My Review

Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks team up once again, this time for an espionage thriller. “Bridge of Spies” is based on the true story of attorney James Donovan’s efforts on behalf of the Eisenhower Administration to negotiate the release of U-2 pilot Francis Gary Powers from the Soviet Union, after Powers’ crash-landed there in 1960.

Tom Hanks is his usual classy self in the leading role. He seems to have these type of roles all to himself these days. Hanks was helped out by a great screenplay by Matt Charman, Ethan Coen, and Joel Coen. This is his fourth picture with producer-director Spielberg, which includes “Saving Private Ryan” (1998), “Catch Me If You Can” (2002), and “The Terminal” (2006).

The supporting cast includes Mark Rylance, Amy Ryan, Alan Alda, Austin Stowell, Scott Shepherd, Eve Hewson, Sebastian Koch, Billy Magnussen, Jesse Plemons, Michael Gaston, and Austin Stowell as Francis Gary Powers.

This motion picture has suspense reminiscent of Alfred Hitchcock’s films, keeping up Spielberg’s reputation as one of Hollywood’s top filmmakers. “Bridge of Spies” was a success at the box office for Amblin Entertainment, DreamWorks Pictures, 20th Century Fox, and Walt Disney Pictures.
