My Review

“Captive” is a crime drama thriller about an escaped prisoner who holds a young woman hostage in her apartment while hiding from police. She reads to him passages from Pastor Rick Warren’s book “The Purpose Driven Life,” causing him to rethink his own life situation.

The faith-based screenplay by Brian Bird was adapted from the 2005 book “Unlikely Angel” by Ashley Smith. This true story was well directed by Jerry Jameson (“Last Flight Out” 2004), in his final film directorial job until retirement, in a career that started when he directed an episode of “The Mod Squad” in 1970.

The two lead actors deliver outstanding performances. David Oyelowo and Kate Mara do quite well in these tense hostage scenes. (Oyelowo is also one of the producers of the picture.) The supporting cast includes Mini Rogers, Michael K. Williams, Leonor Varela, Jessica Oyelowo, Matt Lowe, E. Roger Mitchell, Bill Bennett, Scott Parks, J. Karen Thomas, among others. “Captive” met with lukewarm box office when it was released by Paramount Pictures in September, 2015, but is a great view on DVD these days.
