Producer-director Guy Ritchie (“Sherlock Holmes” 2009) has come up with a new and updated version of a popular 1960’s television show. “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” has all the elements needed for a fun action-adventure picture: Good acting, well-paced action scenes, classic European settings in Italy and England, and a fast-moving and easy to follow storyline from a screenplay written by Ritchie and Lionel Wigram.
“U.N.C.L.E.” was filmed in the patented Ritchie style with split screen action and accompanied expert editing by James Herbert, a unique and off-beat musical score by Daniel Pemberton, and fantastic cinematography by John Mathieson which gave a full appreciation of the subject matter, especially in the filming in the city of Rome.
The actors fit the bill in their individual roles. Henry Cavill and Armie Hammer were perfect as Napoleon Solo and Illya Kurakin, respectively. The supporting cast includes Alicia Vikander, Elizabeth Debicki, Hugh Grant, Jared Harris, Luca Calvani, Sylvester Groth, Simona Caparrini, Misha Kuznetsov, and Christian Berkel. Despite our glowing review, “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.,” which means the United Command for Law and Enforcement, was basically a loss at the box office for Guy Ritchie and Warner Bros. Pictures. Fun view on DVD!
