Arnold Schwarzenegger is back in his most famous role as The Terminator in “Terminator Genisys.” Director Alan Taylor (“Thor: The Dark World” 2013) has supplied loads of action and special effects, but the screenplay by Laeta Kalogridis and Patrick Lussier has created a world of confusion with its movement back and forth in time. This “Back to the Future”-like plot line leaves the audience wondering what on earth is going on in this fifth “Terminator” go-around.
Joining the former governor of California in the cast are a group of newcomers to the “Terminator” series. They include Jason Clarke, Emilia Clarke, Jai Courtney, J. K. Simmons, Dayo Okeniyi, Matt Smith, Courtney B. Vance, Michael Gladis, Sandrine Holt, and Lee Byung-hun.
This “Terminator” is the fifth in the series, following movies released in 1984, 1991, 2003, and 2009. “Terminator Genisys” was modestly successful at the box office, which was not enough to generate the profit needed to cover production costs and advertising expenses for Paramount Pictures. One more “Terminator” sequel would come out in 2019, but after that one, it is not certain if Arnold is once again able to keep his promise that “I’ll be back.”
