My Review

Natalie Portman delivers an enthralling performance as First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy in “Jackie.” Hitherto known for her role as Padme Amidala in the “Star Wars” prequel trilogy (1999, 2002, 2005), Portman has since starred in a variety of roles but none with the depth of this part.

Portman and screenwriter Noah Oppenheimer, under the expert guidance of Chilean director Pablo Larrain making his English-language film debut, give the audience a look into the private grief Mrs. Kennedy went through in the weeks following the President’s assassination. Portman was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress. (“Jackie” was also nominated for Best Original Score and Best Costume Design.)

The supporting cast includes Peter Sarsgaard as Bobby Kennedy, John Carroll Lynch as Lyndon Johnson, Beth Grant as Lady Bird Johnson, Caspar Phillipson as John Kennedy, Greta Gerwig, Billy Crudup, Richard E. Grant, Max Casella, Corey Johnson, Georgia Glen, and John Hurt in his final film role released in his lifetime before his passing in January, 2017. All part of the independent film “Jackie,” a modest hit in theatrical release.
