My Review

“Arrival” is a science fiction film from director Denis Villeneuve (“Sicario” 2015) about twelve alien spacecraft that appear at random locations around the world. Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner play a linguist and physicist, respectively, who are asked by the government to join the team investigating the situation.

This very cerebral scifi movie always takes the high road, never stooping to scary depictions of aliens or the gory R-rated route, which can also be fun entertainment. Villeneuve and screenwriter Eric Heisserer based the project on a 1998 short story called “Short Story of Your Life” by Ted Chaing.

Adams and Renner, who appeared together in the 2013 film “American Hustle,” are joined in this film by Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, Tzi Ma, and Mark O’Brien. Paramount Pictures’ “Arrival” was a hit at the box office in theatrical release, winning one Academy Award, for Best Sound Editing. It was nominated for seven other Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director and Best Screenplay.
