My Review

“Pete’s Dragon” is typical Disney family fare, a live-action remake of the 1977 animated film of the same name. This story of a boy and his dragon friend was directed by David Lowery, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Toby Halbrooks. All they really had to do to make this a quality redux was to follow the Disney formula of the 1977 picture, which they did.

The cast is headed by Oakes Fegley as Pete and Oona Laurence as his friend Natalie, both very talented child actors. Bryce Dallas Howard, daughter of show biz veteran Ron Howard, brightens up the screen with her presence. She is rapidly becoming a big star in her own right. Others include Wes Bentley, Karl Urban, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Jim McLarty, Ian Harcourt, Marcus Henderson, Levi Alexander, and John Kassir as the voice of Elliot. Oscar winner Robert Redford stars as Howard’s father.

“Pete’s Dragon” is fun and watchable entertainment, the feel-good movie of the summer from Walt Disney Pictures, filmed on location in beautiful New Zealand.
