My Review

“The 5th Wave” is a predictable science fiction movie about an alien invasion of earth. It is aimed at the youth market, with Chloe Grace Moretz as the protagonist teenager out to save the world from the aliens. She does deliver a top rate performance as do other cast members like Nick Robinson, Ron Livingston, Alex Roe, Maria Bello, Maika Monroe, and veterans Liev Schreiber (“Ray Donovan” 2013-2020) and Maggie Siff, well known as Dr. Tara Knowles (“Sons of Anarchy” 2008-2014) and as Dr. Wendy Rhoades (“Billions” since 2016).

Columbia Pictures hired J Blakeson (“The Disappearance of Alice Creed” 2009) to direct, and Susannah Grant, Akiva Goldsman, and Jeff Pinkner to adapt the screenplay from a trilogy of novels by Rick Yancey, the first one published in 2013. Perhaps Columbia and Sony Pictures were planning on sequels, but with the low performance at the box office, they may never materialize. A mediocre product like “The 5th Wave” sinks in the ocean of scifi and action-adventure pictures out in release these days.
