My Review

“Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul” takes a look at some of the modern day excesses of evangelical megachurches from independent director Adamma Ebo. She wrote the screenplay, and served as one of the producers of this mockumentary comedy project, adapted from her 2018 short film of the same name. Ebo did a good job in her feature film directorial debut, giving the movie a neutral view of a megachurch (considering the “mockumentary” film format) suffering from a sex scandal that causes most of the members to leave, and efforts of the pastor and his wife to woo them back.

Sterling K. Brown and Regina Hall deliver good performances in the aforementioned lead roles, both of them well known to television audiences as stars of shows like “This is Us” (Brown) and “Law & Order: LA” (Hall). Co-stars in the generally African-American cast include Nicole Beharie, Austin Crute, and Conphidance. The mostly watchable “Honk for Jesus, Save Your Soul” was not a hit at the box office, a disappointment for executive producer Jordan Peele and his Monkeypaw Productions and Focus Features, a part of the Universal PIctures media conglomerate.
