Jennifer Hudson delivered a convincing performance as singer Aretha Franklin in the biopic “Respect.” She did well in the musical numbers and in her acting job under the guidance of first-time director Liesi Tommy.
The screenplay by Tracey Scott Wilson provided good dialogue for Hudson and other actors like Forest Whitaker, Marlon Wayans, Audra McDonald, Tate Donovan, and Mary J. Blige as Dinah Washington and Marc Maron as record producer Jerry Wexler.
However, glowing reviews do not always translate into success with movie goers, with the watchable “Respect” flopping at the box office, much to the chagrin of Metro–Goldwyn-Mayer and United Artists. Release during the Covid 19 pandemic did not help either.
