Producer-director Olivia Wilde has created a psychological thriller drama film that she also stars in called “Don’t Worry Darling.” This story about a seemingly perfect couple living in a company town has striking similarities to “The Stepford Wives” (1975) and “Westworld” (1973). Sloppy direction by Wilde and an unfocused screenplay by Katie Silberman actually make “Don’t Worry Darling” an inferior version of these two science fiction classics.
Wilde and her supporting cast in turn deliver weak performances that also condemn this picture to mediocrity. They include Chris Pine, Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Gemma Chan, Kiki Lane, Nick Troll, Kate Berlant, Timothy Simmons, Douglas Smith, and Ariel Stachel. “Don’t Worry Darling” was only a modest success in theatrical release, creating worries for Olivia Wilde, New Line Cinema, and Warner Bros.
