My Review

Producer-director Ridley Scott (“Thelma & Louise” 1991) returns with an excellent sequel to the 2012 film “Prometheus” called “Alien: Covenant.” This second in the “Alien” prequel series returns to the high quality science fiction horror of the first “Alien” movie of 1979; all three were directed by Scott.

He keeps tight control over the action sequences and over the entire storyline; the two hour film moves along at an even and rapid pace. Scott had outstanding material to work with in the screenplay by John Logan and Dante Harper and the story by Jack Paglen and Michael Green.

Michael Fassbender received critical acclaim for his dual roles as two androids: David 8 and Walter One, the former being the crewmember of the destroyed Prometheus and the latter as Walter 8, supervisor of the Covenant. His performance in this “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” type of role is as good as Spencer Tracy in the 1941 picture or Frederick March in the 1931 version.

Other cast members, who portray crewmen of the Covenant, many of whom fall prey to the most horrible alien ever conceived in motion picture history, include Katherine Waterston, Billy Crudup, Danny McBride, Demian Bichir, Carmen Ejogo, Amy Seimetz, Jussie Smollett, Callie Hernandez, Nathaniel Dean, Alexander England, and Benjamin Rigby.

Naomi Rapace and Guy Pearce briefly reprise their roles from “Prometheus,” and James Franco makes a cameo appearance in this very watchable and entertaining movie from 20th Century Fox and Scott Free Productions.
