My Review

Producer Margot Robbie, director Craig Gillespie (“Million Dollar Arm” 2014), and screenwriter Steven Rogers have put together a dark comedy-drama film about skater Tony Harding called “I, Tonya.” It takes a look at her complex relationship with her mother, skating career, and the tragedy of her boyfriend’s attack on rival skater Nancy Kerrigan.

Margot Robbie and Allison Janney do well in the roles as mother and daughter, with excellent chemistry in the mix. Co-stars include Sebastian Stan as boyfriend Jeff Gillooly, Caitlan Carver as Kerrigan, as well as Julianne Nicholson, Paul Walter Hauser, Bobby Cannavale, and Ricky Russell.

The independently produced “I, Tonya” was a modest hit at the box office, nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Film Editing, Robbie for Best Actress, and Janney winning the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress as Harding’s domineering mother.
