My Review

“Dunkirk” is without a doubt one of the finest World War II films ever made. Producer-director-screenwriter Christopher Nolan (“The Dark Knight” trilogy of 2005, 2008, 2012) tells the true story of the evacuation of hundreds of thousands of Allied soldiers from Dunkirk Beach in northern France during the Battle of France.

The movie depicts the rescue efforts from land, sea, and air perspectives with very minimal dialogue and heavy emphasis on the cinematography and musical score. “Dunkirk” won three Oscars, for Sound Editing, Sound Mixing, and Film Editing, with nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Production Design, and especially well-deserved nominations for Hoyte van Hoytema (Cinematography) and Hans Zimmer (Musical Score).

An effective all-British ensemble cast includes Tom Glynn-Carney, Fionn Whitehead, Jack Lowden, Harry Styles, Aneurin Barnard, Jack D’Arcy, Barry Keoghan, Kenneth Branagh, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, and Michael Caine in a cameo appearance.

“Dunkirk” is a very watchable motion picture from Christopher Nolan and Warner Bros. Pictures, a success in theatrical release.
