Garbage comes in many forms and an example in cinematic form is “The Dark Tower.” Based on a series of Stephen King novels, the film combines elements of science fiction, horror, and western genre stories. The movie’s unfocused plot was the result of bad writing by screenwriters Akiva Goldsman, Jeff Pinkner, Anders Thomas Jensen, and Nikolaj Arcel, who was also the director.
The actors draw mixed reviews. Idris Elba and child actor Tom Taylor turned in believable performances, with a flat and leaden offering by Matthew McConaughey. Solid support came from Dennis Haysbert, Jackie Earle Haley, Fern Kranz, Claudia Kim, Abbey Lee, Katheryn Winnick, and Michael Barbieri.
An example of what is wrong with “The Dark Tower” is demonstrated in the dialogue. “You’re bleeding,” says Taylor. “I heal fast,” replies Elba. It is guaranteed the audience will not heal quickly from watching this dud of a movie from Imagine Entertainment and Columbia Pictures.
