“The Resurrection of Gavin Stone” is an entertaining faith-based film about a former child actor who has run into substance abuse problems and is sentenced to do community service at a megachurch. He finds out about an Easter play the church is planning, and he pretends to be a Christian to get the lead role of Jesus.
The hilarity and drama proceeds from there, with solid direction by Dallas Jenkins (“Once We Were Slaves” 2014) and a lucid screenplay by Andrea Gyertson Nasfell. The talented cast is more than engaging, including Brett Dalton as Gavin Stone, Anjelah Johnson-Reyes as the director of the play, Neil Flynn as Gavin’s father, Shawn Michaels and Christopher Maleki as church members, and D. B. Sweeney as Pastor Allan Richardson.
