My Review

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” episode eight of nine “Star Wars” films, is out with drama and action-adventure bigger and better than ever. This sequel to 2015’s “The Force Awakens” is the story of the Resistance and its continuing fight against Kylo Ren and the First Order, a worthy addition to the “Star Wars” saga under the guidance of the LucasFilm brain trust of executive producer J. J. Abrams, producers Kathleen Kennedy and Ram Bergman, and director-screenwriter Rian Johnson (“Looper” 2012).

“Star Wars: The Last Jedi” is two-and-a-half hours long, met with universal critical acclaim and enthusiastic fan response. It earned $450 million of worldwide box office receipts during the first weekend of release, and about $1.3 billion since then.

Much of the cast of “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” has returned, including Carrie Fisher as Gen. Leia Organa. Fisher passed away in December, 2016, about a year before the release of “The Last Jedi;” the film is dedicated to her memory. Other returnees include Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn, Oscar Isaac as Poe, Domhnall Gleeson as Gen. Hux, Anthony Daniels as C-3PO, Gwendoline Christie as Captain Phasma, and (in motion capture) Andy Serkis as Snoke and Lupita Nyongo as Maz.

Billie Lourd (Fisher’s daughter), Mike Quinn, and Timothy D. Rose reprise their roles as Lt. Connix, Nien Nunb, and Admiral Ackbar, respectively, from several previous “Star Wars” pictures. There seems to be more screen time for both Gleeson and Lourd, not to mention Hamill as Skywalker. Frank Oz once again does a turn as Yoda, as he did in Episodes 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6.

Newcomers adding their own personas to the ever-expanding “Star Wars” encyclopedia of characters are Laura Dern as Vice Admiral Amilyn Holdo of the Resistance, Benicio del Toro as DJ the underworld codebreaker, and Kelly Marie Tran as Rose Tico, Resistance mechanic. Joonas Suotamo took over as Chewbacca from the retired Peter Mayhew. Actor Tom Hardy and Prince William and Prince Harry of the United Kingdom all made cameo appearances, disguised as stormtroopers. And Jimmy Vee plays the popular R2-D2, taking over from Kenny Baker, who passed away in August, 2016.

For good old fashioned fun and excitement at the picture show or on DVD, be sure to catch the watchable special effects-filled “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” from LucasFilm and Walt Disney Pictures.
