My Review

Will Smith won the Best Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Venus and Serena Williams’ father Richard Williams in “King Richard.” This one of six nominations for a biopic that was a little boring and tedious for a 145 minute film; we really do not need that many details of the life of the two tennis stars and their father. Credit goes to director Reinaldo Marcus Green and screenwriter Zach Baylin for creating a picture that was not successful at the box office and is a movie that should be shown in the limited viewing of art house cinemas. Green has previously given the public monotonous movies like “Monsters and Men” (2018) and “Joe Bell” (2020).

The actors did do their job well enough including Saniyya Sidney as Venus, Demi Singleton as Serena, Aunjanue Ellis, Jon Bernthal, Tony Goldwyn, Dylan McDermott, Andy Bean, Kevin Dunn, and Judith Chapman as Nancy Reagan. Yawns are the biggest reward you will get for viewing the long and plodding “King Richard” from executive producers Venus & Serena Williams, producer Will Smith, and Warner Bros. Pictures.

(An interesting footnote to this review: Shortly before winning his Oscar at the Academy Awards ceremony on March 27, 2022, at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, Smith drew international consternation by slapping Oscar presenter Chris Rock for making a joke about his wife Jada Pinkett Smith’s shaved head. Will Smith was banned from attending the Oscar ceremony for ten years.)
